The 2 pictures above pretty well summarize FPC's day at Kimigui Church on Monday. In the top picture, Pastor Drew is in the back leading a seminar for about 40 pastors and ministry leaders while the children in the front wait for their ECD (early childhood development) class to begin. In the bottom shot, the ladies pose with the ECD teachers they taught, while pastor Drew is teaching and the kids are playing a game in the background. Sure, its a small space for so many things to be happening, but one of the amazing gifts of the Kenyan people is their resourcefulness. They are such good stewards of the things the Lord gives them, including their church buildings!
Over half of the churches in the network we are partnered with in Western Kenya have ECD Centers. These centers are a way for the churches to care for the orphans and vulnerable children in their community. The pre-school aged children are able to get a head start on their education as well as get a small meal each day. For some of these children, it is the only meal they will receive all day. The ECD teachers are generally women from the church who volunteer their time to serve these precious children. Most of them have not had any training for the job they are doing so the seminars that the ladies from FPC are leading are a huge help to them.
Lori would train the teachers in a teaching technique.
Then she would model it by teaching the children.
Susan models reading techniques for the teachers.
The kids had a great time playing with bubbles.
While the ladies were leading the ECD teacher seminars, Pastor Drew was able to teach many of the pastors and ministry leaders from the surrounding churches. Several years ago, we were able to send the pastors through a year of Bible college but since that time they have not had the opportunity for much continuing education. The ministry has also continued to grow, so many of the leaders haven't had any formal training. Pastor Drew began at the heart of the Gospel by talking about the person and life of Jesus.
