Peaceful Vote in Kenya
We are so thankful that everything seems to be going well in Kenya following the constitutional referendum yesterday. The official results are out and the new constitution passed by a landslide. While there are definitely some controversial parts of the new constitution, it is so exciting to see the democratic process successfully at work in Kenya. One of the major components of the reform agenda set in place by the peace accord after the 2007 election was that a new constitution must be ratified (they haven't had a new constitution since independence). Not only did Kenyans prove to themselves and the world that they were ready to put the past behind them, they also showed us that they were ready to make the necessary changes to bring about the reforms for the future. This is a huge victory for the millions of Kenyans who have been frustrated by the slow-going reforms over the past couple of years. Lets pray that the new constitution jumpstarts reforms so that Kenya is in a very different place for the next presidential election in December 2012
